The Beginning Of The Pancham Era
The Beginning Of The Pancham Era
The era of 1960's included all superior music composers viz Shankar Jaikishan, SD Burman , Salil Chowdhury , Madan Mohan , OP Nayyar and many more.Even though bollywood had such great iconic composers still there was a lack of some charisma of music. Inspite of SD Burman(Father of Pancham) providing music to film fraternity with real good melodies like 'Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana kya Kahega' , Hai Apna Dil To Awara etc. People were happy listening to these songs yet bored of similar melodies. hence the audience were in search of good music bands and that turned their interest towards English bands.
In those times, there were Murphy radio sets outside tea stalls to listen to music and one fine day people stopped and a heard a song played on the radio carefully. The song was a mix of various genres. It began with castanets and the acoustic guitar being played flamenco (spanish) style for the first twenty five seconds. People were curious and amazed at the same time. The song then cut to a long Arabic- style high pitched humming by the legendary Mohammad Rafi. Finally guitar and castanet took the center stage again with the violin. It was and still is considered an unconventional prelude(the beginning of a song). The song is a duet between Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi where the rhythm was maintained on a secondary percussion instrument the resso resso(picture of the instrument mentioned below). People were astonished to listen such creative melody and music. This was RD Burman's first movie as an independent composer Chhote Nawab(1961) and the song is Matwali Ankhon Wale . RD Burman previously assisted his father Sachin Dev Burman(SD Burman) in many films. Pancham da composed his first tune at the age of 9 and that tune was used by SD Burman in the movie Funtoosh and song is Ae Meri Topi palat Ke Aa . The tune of the famous song Sar Jo Tera Chakraye was also composed by pancham which was used by SD Burman in Pyaasa(1957).
Such was the greatness of Pancham da. "Yeh toh sirf trailer hai ! picture aabhi baaki hai mere doston!! Iss safar pe bane rahiye mere saath".
